I’ve been thinking and reflecting on the time I’ve spent building my business and the feelings that have taken over me in my past few months full-time as a bossbabe. It’s not easy to be fully responsible for a budding business, especially as a business owner who suffers from depression.
I wanted to make my platform a space of love and light. It always will be, of course, but love and light do not mean shrinking away from the topics that reveal the rawness of life. I still battle depression regularly and all the meditation in the world hasn’t cured me yet. However, it has taught me something that’s taken me years to fully understand – the winter season.
A section from one of my favorite books:
Women are cyclical beings and when you into the natural cycles of life – and especially your own menstrual cycle – not only will you get a deeper understanding of yourself (and your body) but you will strengthen your connection to your divine Goddessence.
I’m living, breathing proof of this. It wasn’t until I stopped hating my body (and my period) and deeply connected to my own internal rhythm that I was able to unlock a neglected part of my creativity, strengthen my intuition, flex my self-love muscle, and experience true wellness, self-awareness, and soulful sex…Just as the natural world has seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring) so does our body go through similar phases each month.
Winter:
It’s your fluid phase, and, just like the winter in nature, this is your time to go inward and “hibernate” if you can. You may feel very low in energy as your body undertakes the mammoth task of releasing the previous cycle through your blood. This is essentially a “dying” phase, as we shed what is no longer serving us before we are reborn again. Unlike “summer”, this phase is about your relationship with yourself and is a great time for self-reflection , to slow down, switch off social media, to say “no thank you” to invites, turn off your phone and emails, and to rest and recharge as much as possible. Your hormones are at rock-bottom here, so this is the time to really up the self-love and self-care. Journal, rest, don’t set an alarm, and let your body wake when it wants to if you can…
Your winter is about introspection, which is why it’s important to have some time to yourself. You become an open-source of wisdom as you shed, so it can be an especially powerful time to ask yourself questions like, What needs to be let go of? What needs to be released and purged? And what needs shedding?
~ OPEN WIDE BY MELISSA AMBROSINI {PAGES 59-60}
The winter season of my cycle and the winter season of the year has washed over me in the past week. Coincidentally, I also released my masterclass at the very beginning of my double winter. This is not an energetic time – as so beautifully worded by Melisa. As most women do, I suffered from guilt. Guilt for wanting to work from the couch instead of my desk, sleep as much as possible, and not go to the gym. Guilt for not having words flow through me and offer value to my audience on social media. Guilt for wanting to binge-watch Netflix Christmas movies all day.
Guilt.
That word destroys flow. Flow was my word and theme for 2019. Here we are in November and I’m still destroying my flow with guilt. And yet, I’m talking about it. I’m posting to my blog even though I didn’t send my newsletter out on Monday and I feel guilty about that too. I’m taking a stand that a year ago I wouldn’t have taken. I’m allowing myself freedom. Yes, freedom to flow with my cycle, but also the freedom to feel guilty. It’s ok to feel this way. Allowing myself the grace to feel guilty also allows me to the grace to heal.
Allow yourself to feel guilty. Allow negative feelings to creep in. Don’t let them take up residence but don’t beat yourself up over the feelings that arise. It’s an art form to learn how to handle setbacks and feelings of negativity. An art that has to be practiced.
If you’re feeling guilty today over something that you have done, it doesn’t matter if it’s about not working as hard as you feel you should or about snapping at someone the other day, regardless – give yourself grace. If you are present enough to feel guilty in the first place, then that’s enough. Now, it’s time to show yourself forgiveness and respect your beautiful body and mind for doing the best it can.
