It’s the Ones Who’ve Cracked that the Light Shines Through
Such a beautiful lyric by Jeffery Lewis.
As I sit here thinking about my journey and finishing up week 2 of culinary school, I can’t help but think about damage. Cracks. Some people refer to it as damaged goods or too much baggage or a hot mess. I want to take a moment to say – I feel your pain. I was once considered a very hot mess with plenty of baggage. There’s a stigma around being referred to this way; it’s a punch in the gut and a painfully out of control feeling.
Life is a mix of moments strung together to make our life story. Every movie you watch and every book you read has moments in the story that are sad or discouraging or even sometimes painful to watch. Every person has a chapter in their life they choose not to read out-loud.
AND THIS IS TOTALLY OK
THINGS FALL APART AND YOU PICK UP THE PIECES ARE CREATE A BEAUTIFUL MOSAIC
PEOPLE MOVE ON FROM YOUR LIFE AND YOU FIND THEM REPLACE WITH OTHERS WHO MAKE YOU FEEL SPECIAL AND WHOLE AND COMPLETE
LIFE EVENTS ARE WHIRLING IN A SEEMINGLY OUT OF CONTROL FASHION ONLY TO LAND IN THE PERFECT SPOTS WITH A QUICKNESS
Life in general is a hot mess when you’re blazing your own trail. Be ok with being a mess. This is your permission slip to look at your mess and release all guilt or sadness. It’s ok to have messy emotions and feel your mind being washed over by grief or by sadness.
HEALING IS MESSY
Looking at your deepest fears, your saddest moments, and your gritty personality traits is not an insta-worthy moment. It’s a mascara running down your cheeks, flushed red face, puffy eyes, rats nest hair-do type of moment. You look in your eyes in the mirror and you feel defeated and worn out. The face looking back at you feels saddened and maybe even pathetic or unlovable.
This is the perfect moment to look at this beautiful, cracking soul – and tell her you love her. Look into the puffy eyes and say “I love you and I approve of the woman you are becoming”.
You are more than your fears, your sadness, your personality traits, and your broken moments. You’re more than your happiest moments and best insta-worthy outfits. You are a special, perfect spirit with an earthly body learning to heal from past wounds. You have a guiding force in life surrounding you at all times, holding you when you’re down and wrapping you in a protective embrace. Your future is bright, joyous, and secure because you are a beloved child of the Universe and the Universe is lovingly protecting you now and forever.
Today’s blog post is different than normal. It’s a delicate love letter to the woman who feels broken. It’s a permission slip to feel your feelings, whatever they may be. It’s a hug across the screen from me to you, you perfectly broken light worker.
